Project Management courses at various different levels can be studied through a number of training institutions. Entry level courses will cover the basics of project preparation, costing, execution and completion. More advanced courses will lead onto human resource management and risk analysis etc.

Basic Concepts

Many common terms have evolved to become key phrases for project managers. It's vital to get on the right wavelength with the terms and ways of thinking, and with the skills and tools used in the profession today. Different Project Managers use a number of different approaches, but whichever training route you take there is a lot of common ground.

A Recent Discipline?

As with many modern processes Project Management has early beginnings, but it's come a long way over the years. Techniques such as brute force may have been common in early projects, but the discipline evolved over the centuries. In the early twentieth century, an American engineer called Henry Gantt produced his famous project management tool the Gantt Chart. Around the same time the French engineer Henri Fayol developed 'Fayolism' - functions and principles for management. Fayolism was one of the first comprehensive general management theory statements and the management functions and principles it described still have relevancy today. Fayol's principles of management refer to how people are managed to best effect.

Project Management In The 20th Century

By the mid twentieth century we had moved into the early days of the modern Project Management era, when it started to become recognised as a discipline in its own right. There was a major challenge facing the US Navy - how to incorporate and integrate a complex system to build the Polaris submarine. Thus the PERT chart was developed to simplify the planning and scheduling of this massive project.

Other mathematical project-scheduling models were also developed which quickly spread to private enterprises. Pioneering work by Hans Lang and others led to technology for estimating and managing costs, along with engineering economics.

The International Project Management Association

Under the original name 'International Management Systems Association', the renamed International Project Management Association was established in the sixties. It was an amalgamation of several national Project Management associations, and now boasts worldwide membership. The International Project Management Association offers a four level certification track ranging from Associate to Director.

Project Management Institute (PMI)

In 1969 the Project Management Institute was created in America to advance state-of-the-art project management. In the nineties it published its first version of the definitive guide to project management, the PMBOK Guide. It provides the fundamentals of Project Management as they apply to a great cross-section of projects. As it recognises 42 processes that come within five process groups and nine knowledge areas of PM, you could benefit greatly from the knowledge it contains. Commercial courses have been designed to take students through all the aspects. They are available throughout the world, and prepare students for the PMI certifications, namely the PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) and the PMI Certified Associate of Project Management (CAPM).

PRINCE2 (Derived from PROMPT and PRINCE)

PRINCE2 as the name suggests is the second major version of this PM method. It is a registered trademark of the Office of Government Commerce, an independent office of Her Majesty's Treasury. It's a widely used flexible PM method that navigates you through all the essentials for running a successful project. Students undergoing this training will learn how to manage projects within a clearly defined framework. Checks and balances are in place with the PRINCE2 method for co-ordinating all activities and participants. Based on management by exception, it's efficient and exacting.

There are other project management methods and training schemes that you might find interesting, depending on the knowledge you currently have. The best offer a blend of tools to use to save time and money, plus those all-important management skills that teach leadership, motivation and teamwork.
